RouteRainbow Bay - Carlo Sandblow - Murrawar lookout - Bymien picnic area - Poona Lake - Freshwater Lake (N1) - Teewah Beach - Double Island Point - Rainbow Beach
NotesAn easy two day circuit leading through scenery very similar to the more popular walking routes on Fraser Island. The rainforest near Bymien and Poona Lake are both highlights. It's possible to walk around Poona Lake in around 30 minutes. A shortcut track (closed to vehicles) leads from near the lighthouse to right at the very end of Rainbow Beach. The section of Rainbow Beach to the NE of the Leisha track is strewn in a few sections with dead trees, meaning that some paddling may be necessary near high tide. Carlo Sandblow does not lead onto Rainbow Beach with a drop of around 70m over crumbling sandy and rocky slopes, so visit the sandblow on the way to Bymien, rather than from Rainbow Beach. A couple of hundred of metres of quite steep but open forest separate the upper corner of the sandblow and the Telegraph Track leading to Bymien.

RoutePark HQ - Castle Rock - Mt Norman - Stone Gate - West Bald Rock - South Bald Rock - Border track (N1) - Bald Rock (NSW) - Paling Yard Creek - Underground Creek - Dr Roberts Waterhole - Pyramids Road - Park HQ
NotesA circuit walk leading through some of Giraween's best scenery leading briefly across the state border to the adjoining Bald Rock NP. The route up South Bald Rock is easy to follow, mostly over bare rock. West Bald Rock routes looked more difficult to find. An alternative route to Bald Rock summit leads from this route directly up its SW flank, a shorter ascent than the normal approach along the eastern ridge. Apert from the spectacular bare granite mountains, the heathland clearings near Paling Yard Creek are also very scenic. Park authorities are unhelpful regarding the legality of camping outside designated campsites - it's possible to camp at many points along this route. The Giraween creeks normally have some water, although water will always be available at the Bald Rock picnic area.

NotesProbably the best day walk in the vicinity of Cradle Mountain this route climbs up first high above Lake Dove, and then on across the plateau briefly before ascending Cradle Mountain. The ascent to Cradle Mountain will require some agility and scrambling skills and becomes more dangerous when rain makes the rocks slippery. Although short in distance the ascent and descent of Cradle Mountain is quite slow going.

NotesA justifiably popular world-renowned walk amongst the fortress-like mountains of Tasmania's central plateau. The path is now constructed to a very high standard meaning that dry feet are not an unlikely end result. Weather permitting, side trips to Cradle Mountain, Mt Ossa, The Labyrinth and The Acropolis are all very worthwhile, although Cradle Mountain does require some basic srambling skills. NotesAn old escape route for ship-wrecked sailors, this path crosses wild and remote scenery. Frequent rain and muddy sections make the path slippery in some places and tree-roots add to the ankle-wrenching possibilities (especially the western side of the Ironbounds). The route does however have a true wilderness feeling and a chance to be completely self-sufficient, and there's even the distraction of borrowing a rowing boat to cross New River Lagoon. It's worth checking for up-to-date information before setting off on this path as conditions and routes near the sandbar sections can change.

The mountains are wonderfully craggy with the path somehow managing to navigate through seemingly impossible slopes. RouteWeano Gorge - Handrail Pool - Start of Magic Mile - Weano Gorge
NotesWeano Gorge leads to the ultimate rock pool at Handrail Pool (the handrail is a welcome addition in clambering down to the pool). It's possible to wade on further along the 'Magic Mile', but the going is difficult and requires some basic climbing skills. Trainers and narrow feet are useful for negotiating the rock ledges further along the 'Mile'. Nearby, Hancock Gorge provides relatively easy access to another beautiful pool, Kermit's pool along polished slot canyons.

Route(Settlement) - Little Island - Erskine Creek - Mt Gower - return
NotesThe best views on Lord Howe are from the nothern hills such as Mt Eliza. The Mt Gower ascent however, has some very lofty views across the entire island, in some ways similar to the views from Goat House Cave. The walk passes below some spectacular cliffs on a flank of Mt Lidgbird, and provides an interesting graduation of plants and trees from sub-tropical sea-level to the cool temperate summit. The mist forest on top of Mt Gower is reminiscent of cool temperate rainforests of Tasmania, New Zealand and Patagonia. From Little Island the (around 4km long) trail skirts the pebbly beach for about 200 metres before ascending a height of about 100m along a gully to a balcony path below the cliffs (look for a wheelie bin full of hard hats). Access to Mount Gower is limited to guided walkers paying $40, which if taken literally, means you can walk unguided as far as Erskine Creek (therefore staying on Mt Lidgbird's flanks). It's unclear if the restriction is wholly enforceable anyway. Notice of applicable penalties is not served, just two signs indicate that access in limited to guided walkers. The Island Board and Tourist Office are less than forthcoming on the legal status of daring to set foot on Mt Gower unguided. If you do decide to go unguided, the path is fairly obvious, with fixed ropes on the steeper sections, which could get quite slippery when damp or in rain. The most dangerous section is below the cliffs of Mt Lidgbird, where potential rockfalls make it inadvisable to linger unneccessarily. The only guided walk operator, Sea to Summit Expeditions, runs trips about once or twice per week in winter, at least a few times per week in summer (depending on demand). It currently (2005) asks patrons to sign a Waiver of Liability, which amongst other things forces you to acknowledge that the walk is associated with a greater than the accepted safety of life at home or work ! They also ask you to assume liability yourself for personal injury, loss, etc resulting from negligence of the operator !!

RouteSettlement - Capella Lodge - Goat House Cave - Boat Harbour - Rocky Run - Mutton Bird Pt - Blinky Beach - Settlement
NotesA good circuit for a day's walk would be to walk past Capella Lodge and climb up to Goat House Cave on Mt. Lidgbird where there are excellent views back across the island. Walk a little further on around the rock ledges near the cave for a view of Ball's Pyramid. A couple of sections near the cave have fixed ropes which would be useful in wet weather. Rocky Run and Boat Harbour are worth the short detour on the return jouney and there are fine views out to sea from the balcony path leading from Rocky Run to Blinky Beach.

RouteSettlement - Johnson's Beach - King's Beach - Little Island - Capella Lodge - Settlement
NotesA very scenic walk, with changing views up to the towering Mt Lidgbird and Mt Gower. It's worth detouring near Capella Lodge across a (photogenic) stile onto Johnson's, Kings and Salmon Beach. Little Island itself isn't that special, but the views out to the pounding surf at the bottom of the sheltered lagoon are worthwhile.

RouteSettlement - Old Settlement Beach - Dawson's Point Ridge - North Beach - Mt Eliza - Dawson's Point - Settlement
NotesEither Mt Eliza or Kim's Lookout give the best views on the island, across the Lagoon to the towering mountains at the southern end. The forest sections across Dawson's Ridge are also pretty, as are the quiet bays and beaches at Old Settlement Beach and North Beach. The walk around Dawson's Point is possible with a low to medium tide and gives a slightly different perspective on views across the lagoon. The rock pools to the south of the public jetty are worth exploring at low tide. The path climbs a suprisingly long way over Dawson's Point Ridge.
